About Williamson, West Virginia
Williamson is a city of 3,083 people and the county seat of Mingo County, set on the Tug Fork River across from South Williamson, Kentucky. The land belonged to the Williamson family, and it was still being farmed in 1890. That changed when the Norfolk & Western Railway laid its main line through the valley and built a large rail yard here to serve the coal mines of the region.
The town was incorporated in 1905, and with the railroad it grew fast. It had just 688 people in 1900, then 6,819 by 1920 and 9,410 by 1930. Most historians credit the name to Wallace J. Williamson, who owned the townsite, made a fortune in local real estate and opened the city's first bank and first hotel. Others say it honors his father, Benjamin F. Williamson, who once owned most of the region's land and divided it among his sons.
- A house built of coalThe Coal House went up in 1933, with walls made from 65 tons of bituminous coal mined at the nearby Winifrede Seam. It joined the National Register in 1980 and serves as home base for the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce. A fire gutted its interior in October 2010, and the inside was later rebuilt while the historic building was kept intact.
- A floodwall since 1991The Tug Fork flooded Williamson badly in 1977 and again in 1984, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a floodwall around the city, finished in 1991. Gates at the main entrances lock shut to hold back high water. They were closed in a major flood in 2002 and partly closed in 2003. In 2025, when the river rose higher than at any time since 1984, every gate was shut for the first time.
- Hatfield-McCoy weekendEvery June up to 500 runners from across the country and abroad line up in South Williamson, Kentucky, for the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon. They cross into town and finish downtown in the middle of the yearly Hatfield-McCoy Reunion Festival. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a network of ATV routes, wind through the surrounding mountains, and the Buffalo Trail connects them to town on West 4th Avenue.
