About Williston, Florida

Williston is a city of 2,976 people in eastern Levy County, part of the Gainesville metropolitan area. J.M. Willis founded the settlement in 1853 and named it after himself. Residents first incorporated it in 1897 under the name Town of Williston, and on June 2, 1929, they incorporated it again, this time as a city.

Two railroads once brought passengers to Williston, because the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line each kept a depot here. Passenger trains no longer stop, and since 2004 the depot has served only Amtrak's Thruway Motorcoach buses, which run to Jacksonville and Lakeland. Freight trains still pass through on the Florida Northern Railroad's West Coast Subdivision.
