About Williston, South Carolina
Williston is a town of 2,877 people in Barnwell County, with U.S. Route 78 running through its center between Blackville and Aiken. The town grew up at the midpoint of the Charleston-Hamburg railroad, the line that carried the Best Friend locomotive. Trains ran through Williston until the tracks were pulled up in the 1990s. The South Carolina Department of Archives then recognized the old track site as historically significant, and the South Carolina Heritage Corridor now takes in this stretch of the old line.
- The Williston Way, 1921Austin Lattimore started Williston's own newspaper, the Williston Way, in 1921. It kept printing the town's news for decades, and in 1989 it joined with the Barnwell People-Sentinel.
- A pioneer's first schoolRosa Louise Woodberry, born in 1869, lived in Williston until she was thirteen and got her early schooling here. She became a journalist and teacher, and in 1908 she founded Woodberry Hall School for Girls in Atlanta. She was also the University of Georgia's first woman student. She died in 1932.
- Nine holes since 1957Williston Country Club opened in 1957 as a public course on Fairway Drive. Jimmy Tarrance designed its nine holes, which play to par 36 and stretch 3,071 yards from the back tees.
