About Willow Street, Pennsylvania
Willow Street is a community of 9,149 people in Lancaster County, about 4 miles south of Lancaster, the county seat. Most of it lies in West Lampeter Township, and a smaller part reaches west into Pequea Township. Swiss Mennonites began settling near here in 1709 or 1710, when John Hans Herr, Hans Meylin and Meylin's son Martin reached the Conestoga country and picked out a tract of ten thousand acres north of Pequea Creek.
Early in the 20th century, willows grew along both sides of the main road for the whole length of the town, and the community took its name from them. As Willow Street grew, crews widened the road and added sidewalks, so most of the trees had to come down. A few survived, and one tall willow stood behind Kendig Square Plaza until a wind storm knocked it over in late February or early March 2018.
- The Herr House of 1719The Herr House went up in 1719, built of sandstone cut from a quarry on the property, and it shows how well the first Mennonite settlers of Lancaster County prospered. No older original Mennonite meeting house survives anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, and it is also counted as the oldest homestead in the county. The Hans Herr House is on the National Register.
- Where the long rifle beganHans Meylin and his son Martin were among the pioneers who arrived in 1709. The Martin Meylin Gunshop stands in Willow Street, and the long rifle was first made there.
