About Wilsall, Montana

Wilsall is a community of 197 people in Park County, Montana, 29 miles northeast of Bozeman. The town grew up with the railroad: the Northern Pacific Railway reached Wilsall in December 1909, and a post office opened one year after the tracks came in. During the 1910s, crowds of homesteaders settled the surrounding country, where they raised cattle and planted wheat.

  • Named for Will and SallyThe town's name joins the first names of a married couple. Will Jordan was part of the Jordan-Robertson Company, a cattle ranch, and Sally was his wife. Will's father, Walter B. Jordan, helped plan where the streets and lots would go, and the Wilsall Townsite Company handled the sale of those lots.
  • Cattle and wheat in the 1910sOnce the Northern Pacific line and the post office were in place, the 1910s brought a wave of homesteaders to the Wilsall area. They came to run cattle and to grow wheat, and that work shaped the town.
  • Home of the RebelsWilsall belongs to Shields Valley Public Schools, which teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district's elementary school is in Wilsall, while the Jr/Sr High School is in Clyde Park. Shields Valley High School teams compete as the Rebels.
