About Wilton Center, Illinois

The first public school at Wilton Center was built in 1850. It was made of stone taken from a quarry close by. Local people raised and hauled the stones, giving their own time and labor. The schoolhouse measured 20 by 30 feet. In 1878 it was standing and still in use as a school.

Wilton Center was once called Twelve Mile Grove. Hunters knew the grove well for its deer, wild turkeys and prairie chickens. A trail between the Des Plaines timber and the Kankakee River crossed it, and Native travelers often camped here.
