About Windsor, New Jersey

Windsor is a community of 330 people in Robbinsville Township, Mercer County. In the 17th century the land here was wild country dotted with Native American camps. A stagecoach turnpike from Bordentown to South Amboy was finished in 1814, and William McKnight, a director of the turnpike company, built a tavern where the road crossed today's Windsor-Perrineville Road. By 1816 travelers between New York and Philadelphia rode the local stretch along Main Street.

The village was founded in 1818 and named Centerville, because it sat at the geographic center of the state. The Camden and Amboy Railroad came through late in 1831, so rail travelers began stopping here while nearby farms and mills sent their goods through town. Centerville soon grew into the biggest village between Yardville and Hightstown. In 1846 it took the name Windsor, since a post office in Hunterdon County already went by Centerville.

  • Three townships, one villageWindsor first lay in Windsor Township, the source of its name. When that township split in 1797 into East Windsor and West Windsor, the village went with East Windsor. In 1860 the southern part of East Windsor, Windsor included, became Washington Township, which took the name Robbinsville Township in 2007.
  • Magrilla and an old trailBefore the village was founded, the thick woods beside it were called Magrilla, a name of unknown origin. The stagecoach turnpike that brought McKnight's tavern was an improvement on the Old York Road, which began as the Tuckaraming Trail, a Native American path used before European settlers arrived.
  • The crossroads by the tracksWindsor has always centered on the corner where Main Street meets Church Street, right beside the railroad. A 1988 study of the village called that crossing its focal point, then and now. The general store stood close by, along with the passenger station and the freight shed that served the line. The station and shed came down around the middle of the 20th century.
