About Winesburg, Ohio

The community was founded in 1829 and named Weinsberg, after a German town. Postal officials changed the spelling to Winesburg in 1833, when a post office opened. Despite the shared name, it was not the setting of Sherwood Anderson's novel Winesburg, Ohio.
