About Wise, Virginia
Wise is a town of 2,971 people in the center of Wise County, and it is the county seat. The county was formed in 1856 and named for Henry Alexander Wise, who served as governor of Virginia from 1856 to 1860, and the town has held the county government ever since.
The town was first incorporated in 1874 under the name Gladeville. In 1924 it took the name Wise, honoring the same governor. Henry A. Wise was the last man to lead Virginia before the Civil War, and he was also the first governor who came from the Eastern Shore.
- Raided on June 1, 1862Early in 1862, Confederate General Humphrey Marshall made Gladeville his headquarters while he defended southwest Virginia. Union troops raided the town on June 1, 1862, and took the town clerk, Rev. Morgan T. Lipps, prisoner after he reportedly insulted them. They let him go, but they burned half the town. A historical marker recalls the raid, and every July, on the second weekend, re-enactors stage a Civil War living history program.
- Courthouse and hotel on Main StreetAs the county seat, Wise is home to the Wise County Courthouse on Main Street, which joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Ten years later the Colonial Hotel, another Main Street building that today goes by the name Inn at Wise Court House, joined it on the Register in 1991.
- Home of UVA's College at WiseThe University of Virginia's College at Wise stands in the town, and its theater usually puts on two productions a year. Through the school year, the Pro-Art Association also brings plays, concerts and fine-arts events to Wise.
- A children's stage since 2006The Appalachian Children's Theater teaches the performing and fine arts to children from Eastern Kentucky, Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The group opened its renovated building on Main Street in 2006.
