About the Village of Withee, Wisconsin
Withee is a village of 506 people in Clark County, Wisconsin. Most of it lies in the Town of Hixon, and a small piece reaches into the Town of Longwood. James S. Boardman became the first settler here in 1870, and George Richards and David R. Goodwin came soon after. In 1874 Bernard Brown opened a post office called Winneoka on his farm and sold a few supplies, so settlers no longer had to bring their mail and goods all the way from Chippewa Falls or Greenwood.
In 1880 the Wisconsin Central Railroad ran its line between Abbotsford and Chippewa Falls through this spot, and the village was platted in 1881. It took the name of Niran Withee, who had taught school in Maine, worked as a lumberman at La Crosse and served in the Wisconsin legislature. E.A. Eaton opened the first store in 1881 and sold it to W.S. Tufts, who kept the post office inside. Saloons, a hotel, a blacksmith, a lumber yard and more stores followed, and Withee incorporated as a village in 1901.
- A Danish church in 1893Drawn by the Spaulding Company's offer of church land, a Chicago pastor of the Danish Lutheran faith, a Grundtvig follower, led a few families to the Town of Hixon in 1893. Other Danes followed, and by 1896 thirty families belonged. They kept speaking Danish and in 1913 hired a teacher of folk dancing and gymnastics. The settlers slowly mixed with English-speaking neighbors, but Nazareth Lutheran church still stands.
- Electric lights in 1902Electricity reached the village in 1902 from the Paul A. Paulsen mill. A water system followed in 1907 and a volunteer fire department in 1908. Farm families outside the village waited about 35 more years, until the new Clark Electric Cooperative put up lines around 1937 with a loan from the New Deal's Rural Electrification Administration.
- Shipping point for Spaulding MillsOnce it incorporated in 1901, Withee became the place where D.J. Spaulding Mills of Owen loaded its goods onto the Soo Line Railroad. The 1906 plat map places the depot, the post office and one church inside the first plat, which ran between Division and Pine streets. Plats added east of Division Street held the State Bank of Withee, the school, a hall and two other churches.
- One community with OwenWithee's first school was a one-room building put up in 1883, and a four-room school was added in 1890. Today the village sits one mile from the city of Owen. The two are separate municipalities, but they work together as one community and share the Owen-Withee school district.
