The Consolidation Coal Company founded it in 1897 as a company town, set in the middle of western Maryland's Georges Creek coal region. In 1982 the Maryland Historical Trust surveyed the town and entered it in the state's inventory of historic properties as the Woodland Survey District.

- The church and the storeWoodland once had its own community church and a convenience store. Both buildings still stand, but they have since been turned into homes.
- The Winebrenner Log CabinThe Winebrenner Log Cabin is one of several early stone and log houses that line the Old Legislative Road through the coal country of Georges Creek. The Maryland Historical Trust recorded it in its inventory of historic properties in 1982.
