About Wopsononock, Pennsylvania

Wopsononock is a community of 56 people in Logan Township, in western Blair County. Juniata Gap Road climbs 5 miles up the mountain to it from Altoona, and the Census Bureau first listed it as a census-designated place before the 2020 census.

The Altoona & Beech Creek railroad, a narrow-gauge road, ran over the mountain from Juniata to Daugherty. People knew it as the Wopsononock railroad, and once it added passenger service, visitors could ride the train up to the summit.

  • A summer resort by 1911A tall lookout was built at the top of the mountain, with a wide view over the country around it. Many cottages followed, and once passenger trains ran on the railroad, Wopsononock became a popular place to spend the summer. The 1911 county history of Altoona and Blair County described the resort.
  • The Wopsononock railroadThe narrow-gauge line ran fourteen and one-half miles between Juniata and Daugherty. Its official name was the Altoona & Beech Creek railroad, but most people called it after Wopsononock, the mountaintop resort it carried passengers to.
  • 2,474 feet upWopsononock sits high on the Allegheny Front, and Juniata Gap, off to the southeast, lies 1,000 feet below it. Dean, down in the valley of Clearfield Creek, is 6 miles away to the north and west.
