About Wyoming, Michigan
Wyoming is a city of 76,501 people in Kent County, on the southwest edge of Grand Rapids. In the summer of 1832 Amos Gordon took Robert Howlett, Luther Lincoln and Stephen Tucker by birch canoe along the Grand River to scout for land. They found Buck Creek flowing into the Grand with enough force to turn a mill, so most of the first settlers built beside it. Mills were running on the creek in 1833, and by April 1834 the settlement was called Little Prairie, with its own post office from May 24, 1834.
For years the area was part of Byron Township. On April 3, 1848, that township was cut in two, and the northern 36 square miles, where about 500 of its people lived, became Wyoming. The settlers named it for Wyoming County, New York, where most of them had lived before coming west. It stayed a farm township selling its crops in Grand Rapids for decades, then resisted annexation by Grand Rapids and Grandville until it incorporated as a city in 1959.
“The City of Wyoming is hardly your typical city. Rather than spreading out from an original point of settlement, this community grew from the outside in.”
- A house lost to a tornadoJustus Charles Rogers, one of the township's best-known pioneers, claimed a homestead in 1836 where 28th Street now meets Clyde Park Avenue. He put up a frame house that spring for his wife, but when the couple returned in September 1836 a tornado had wrecked it. Rogers started over, raising the first floor of what became Rogers Mansion in 1837 and finishing the second floor in 1839.
- Fisher's Station, 1870David Fisher came to Wyoming in 1857, bought land from Gordon's estate and rebuilt Gordon's old Buck Creek mill, which had burned. He housed his millers in cabins on Burlingame Avenue and later dug lime and peat farther down the creek. When the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad built a station here in 1869, Fisher had a town platted around it in 1870. Fisher's Station got a post office in 1871 and had 65 people in 1888.
- A war plant that never openedAfter the United States entered World War I, the federal government began building a picric acid factory near 44th Street and Clyde Park Avenue. It gave work to thousands, and rumors of an airplane factory drew still more people, but construction stopped after the Armistice of 11 November 1918. In the 1920s builders hauled away its materials to put up cheap houses with tarpaper roofs and no basements.
- Gypsum under Plaster CreekThe 1881 county history described salt-bearing shale layered with gypsum and limestone rising to the surface in Wyoming township, known to run 184 feet deep. Plaster Creek first powered plaster works here in 1841, on land Daniel Ball leased from De Garmo Jones. The Alabastine Company bought much of the gypsum in 1880 and opened the Alabastine Mine in 1907, and the mines along the creek ran for decades.
