In August 1939, a family in Yakima Valley, Washington, lives in a shacktown community. They originally come from Kansas and Missouri and have five children, the eldest in third grade. They pay seven dollars a month in rent and do not have plumbing. The husband earns forty-four dollars working for the Works Progress Administration, illustrating the economic hardships of the time.
