About Zalma, Missouri

The first settler at the site of Zalma was Urban Asherbramer, a German pioneer. He arrived on the upper Castor River in 1800, where the river empties into Mingo Bottom. He built a water mill there to grind corn. More than a century later, that mill was still running on water power.

In 1884 the Bell Messler Company built a factory at Zalma. Its workers cut veneer and thin box laths. The plant stood just upstream from the mill dam. It gave work to women, who stacked the laths in long rows to dry in the sun.
