About Abbeville, South Carolina
Abbeville is a city of 4,874 people and the seat of Abbeville County, in the Piedmont of western South Carolina. French Huguenots settled here in 1764 on a site named by John de la Howe, and both the town and the county took their name from Abbeville in France. The town was incorporated in 1840. John C. Calhoun, born on a farm at the edge of town in what is now Mt. Carmel, began his law practice here before he became Vice President.
Abbeville is often called the place where the Confederacy began and ended. On November 22, 1860, a meeting on the ground later named Secession Hill set South Carolina's break from the Union in motion, and a month later it became the first state to leave. In 1865 Jefferson Davis fled Richmond and spent a night at the home of his friend Armistead Burt. In that house's front parlor on May 2, 1865, Davis held his last official cabinet meeting and accepted that the Confederate government was finished. The Armistead Burt House joined the National Register in 1970.
- Gypsy at the holidaysOld Abbeville families make a holiday pudding called Gypsy for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It layers pound or sponge cake with boiled custard, sherry, whipping cream and almonds, and some cooks use bourbon in place of the sherry. It's served in a stemmed crystal compote and isn't known outside Abbeville except among families who moved away. Local legend says an unknown woman served it to Jefferson Davis in 1865.
- South Carolina's tallest buildingThe Prysmian Copper Wire Tower, built in Abbeville in 2009, rises 373 feet over 30 floors, taller than any other building in the state.
- The tornado of 1973On March 31, 1973, an F4 tornado tore through Abbeville and killed 7 people. No other single tornado in the country took more lives that year.
