About Aetna, Indiana

In 1881 the Aetna Powder Company, a munitions maker, built Aetna as its company town. The site was picked partly because it sat far out in the dunes. About 500 people worked at the plant, and most lived in Aetna. The workforce grew to 1,200 during World War I.

At first, workers hauled Aetna's munitions by cart to the train station in Miller. The Wabash Railroad arrived in 1895 and gave Aetna a station of its own. The plant closed after World War I, and Gary annexed Aetna between 1924 and 1928.
