About Afton, New York
Afton is a town of 2,769 people in the southeast corner of Chenango County, where Interstate 88 and the Susquehanna River pass through. Settlers first came to the area around 1786, on land that lay inside the original Township of Clinton. On November 18, 1857, the southern end of Bainbridge was split off to form Afton, which is why it was once called South Bainbridge.
Bainbridge and Afton had earlier been a single town called Jericho. One winter a hard storm cut off supplies to the part that is now Afton, and some residents starved or froze to death, but the people of present-day Bainbridge refused to send help. The rural families still held a grudge when spring arrived, and Jericho split into two towns.
- Named for a Scottish riverThe town is named for Afton Water, a little river in New Cumnock parish in Ayrshire, Scotland, which the poet Robert Burns made famous. Residents loved the line from his poem, and a name starting with A also put Afton ahead of Bainbridge on state registers. The area had earlier been called Clinton, after General George Clinton, and people joked that it was Jockey Port because of its horse raceway.
- Joseph Smith's weddingJoseph Smith, founder of the Latter-day Saints church, married Emma Hale in Afton. The wedding took place on ground that is now the Afton Fairgrounds and Raceway.
- On the Underground RailroadPeople escaping slavery in the South passed through Afton on the Underground Railroad. Some houses in town have been found with hidden rooms and staircases, including one on Pleasant Avenue.
- North Afton, once AyrshireThe hamlet of North Afton, north of the village on NY Route 41, used to be called Ayrshire. It became an incorporated village in 1829, gave that up, incorporated again in 1833, and later dissolved a second time. Bettsburg, near the southern town line, carries the name of Peter Betts, a local merchant.
