About Bainbridge, New York

Bainbridge is a town of 3,060 people in Chenango County, with its village at the center and the Susquehanna River running through the middle. Iroquois nations lived here first, and during the Revolution they sided with the British and raided American settlements. In 1779 George Washington sent the Sullivan Expedition north into the region, and when General James Clinton's troops reached Bainbridge, its people had already fled to Upper Canada. The soldiers then burned their homes, their crops and the food they had stored for winter.

European American settlers arrived around 1788, starting with a group known as the "Vermont Sufferers." They had held land claims in eastern New York, but Vermont sold the same claims to other buyers, and the families lost them. The town was organized in 1791 as Jericho, part of Tioga County, before Chenango County existed.

  • Renamed in 1814In 1814 Jericho took the name Bainbridge to honor William Bainbridge, a commodore in the United States Navy.
  • Four towns carved outThe town gave up land as new towns formed around it. Parts of Norwich and Oxford came from it in 1793, Greene in 1798 and 1799, and Afton in 1857.
  • A new river bridge in 2007The Susquehanna enters the town from the east and leaves across the south, and Interstate 88 follows its course. In 2007 a new bridge over the river replaced the old metal one, and a traffic circle opened that year where County Route 39 meets State Route 206, on the east bank between I-88 and the village.
