About Alden, Illinois

Alden is a community of 113 people in McHenry County, at the center of Alden Township where Alden Road meets Illinois Route 173. Its first post office was called Wedgewood, but another office in Illinois already had that name, so the postal name was changed to Alden. The new name honored Alden, New York, which many of the early settlers had left to come here, and the township took the same name as its post office.

  • Laid out in 1848Francis Wedgewood laid out the village of Alden in 1848, and John Brink of Crystal Lake surveyed it. The Wedgewood name was also the first name of the local post office, until the clash with another Illinois office forced the switch to Alden.
  • Where Nippersink Creek beginsNippersink Creek rises near Alden on the High Point Unit, land held by the McHenry County Conservation District. From those headwaters the creek runs to the southeast and then east across the county.
  • Mail through Harvard nowA post office called Alden was running by 1844. By 2023 the community no longer had a post office of its own, and its mail now comes through the Harvard post office, 60033.
