About Chemung, Illinois
Mr. Myer built a stone mill in Chemung village in 1853. He fitted it with the running gear of an older mill built by William Sewer. Sewer's mill had begun as a sawmill and later ground flour too. The stone mill did a large business making buckwheat flour for the Chicago market.
Chemung village had one of the oldest burying grounds in the county. Over time burials there became rare, and the old grounds were forsaken. A newer cemetery in the village took its place. The new grounds lay in the part of the village inside Dunham Township.
- The village's first doctorDoctor Miller was the first physician to settle at Chemung. He came in 1848 and stayed until 1856. In 1875 Dr. Chase set up practice there and kept at it for many years.
