About Alexandria, Indiana

Alexandria is a city of 5,149 people in Monroe Township, Madison County, about 48 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The town was platted in 1836 beside Pipe Creek, the same year the first mills went up along the stream. Monroe Township held two towns, Alexandria and Osceola, and the LaFayette and Muncie Railroad ran across it from southeast to northwest. Alexandria was incorporated as a town in 1898.

  • Indiana's first interurbanIn 1898 Indiana's first interurban line started running between Alexandria and Anderson, the county seat 11 miles to the south. It was the same year Alexandria became an incorporated town.
  • A brick house in 1835A year before the town was platted, Peter Edwards built the area's first brick house on a farm just south of Alexandria. That farm later belonged to Abram Miller.
  • Mills on Pipe CreekIn 1836 James James, Peter Cassell, Daniel Franklin and Henry Hough each built small mills on Pipe Creek. By the time the old county history was written, all but one were gone. The survivor stood three miles west of Alexandria, belonged to David Festler and did a small custom business.
  • The creek through townPipe Creek begins in Delaware County and gathers enough water from its tributaries to become a sizable stream by the time it reaches Alexandria. It runs through the south side of town, then heads southwest past Frankton and joins the White River at Perkinsville after a course of twenty-five miles.
