About Town of Alfred, New York: Home, Street by Street
Alfred University began in 1836 as a select school. It became Alfred Academy in 1843 and won a university charter in 1857. In 1900 the State School of Clay Modeling and Ceramics opened there. Its Steinheim Museum, built like a German castle, was the second oldest college museum in the country.
The first settlers came to Alfred in 1807. Clark Crandall, Nathan Green and Edward Green, three Seventh Day Baptists, came from the New York towns of Berlin and Brookfield. They cleared forest and built log cabins so their families could follow. Crandall later became a county judge and served in the state legislature.
