About Alpine, California

Alpine is a community of 14,696 people in San Diego County, set in the Cuyamaca Mountains about 30 miles east of downtown San Diego. Kumeyaay people and their ancestors lived on this land for possibly as long as 12,000 years before modern settlers came. In the 1880s a resident said the hills reminded her of Switzerland, her native country, and her idea gave the town its name.

When Benjamin and Harriet Arnold arrived in 1887, Alpine was a stagecoach stop with thirty-five families. The Arnolds helped turn that stop into a lasting town. Ranches and farms spread over the hills in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and horse ranches and small farms still surround the shops on Alpine Boulevard.

  • Kumeyaay homelandAlpine borders the Viejas and Sycuan reservations of the Kumeyaay. The Ewiiaapaayp Band and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians both keep their headquarters in Alpine.
  • Viejas Mountain, 4,189 feetViejas Mountain is the highest peak around Alpine, which itself sits at about 2,000 feet. Summer highs over 105 degrees and winter lows under 35 come now and then, most often on the mountain's slopes in the north end of town.
  • Padres, Congress and NASCARMark Grant pitched in the major leagues and later called San Diego Padres games. Duncan D. Hunter and Duncan L. Hunter both served in the U.S. House. Alpine also counts NASCAR drivers Sheldon Creed and Cole Whitt and Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia among its notable people.
