About Alta, California
Alta was once a prominent railroad station with a large depot and hotel. In the early 1870s, much railroad wood was cut here and stacked in cords for later use. A man named Price once ran a fine boys' school at Alta. The school later moved to Auburn, and the property became a tuberculosis sanatorium.
In 1908, two naturalists called Alta one of the small mining towns of Bret Harte fame. Karl R. Coolidge spent April and May of 1907 at Alta collecting beetles. Beetles were found in large numbers around Lake Alta, a small lake below the village. The writers praised its good hotel and recommended the spot to other collectors.
