About Nevada City, California

Nevada City is a city of 3,152 people and the county seat of Nevada County, on the Sierra Nevada's western slopes. Before the Gold Rush, the site held Ustumah, a Nisenan village. Gold seekers arrived in 1849 and called their camp Nevada, a Spanish word meaning snow-covered, for the white peaks above it. Chinese immigrants came too, along with Black Americans, some free and some enslaved.

For a time the camp also went by Deer Creek Dry Diggins and Caldwell's Upper Store. Miners opened the Gold Tunnel, the town's first mine, north of Deer Creek in 1850, and through 1850 and 1851 no mining town in California mattered more. The town was incorporated as Nevada on April 19, 1856. People kept mixing it up with the neighboring state of Nevada, so in 1864 the town added City to its name, and it has been Nevada City ever since.

  • A sawmill on Deer CreekIn August 1850, Lewis & Son built Nevada City's first sawmill on Deer Creek, just upstream from town. A water wheel turned its saw, cutting lumber for a camp that was growing fast around the mines.
  • The county's first newspaperThe Nevada Journal started printing in 1851, the first newspaper in the town and in all of Nevada County. About the same year, the Pioneer Cemetery opened behind the Methodist church, which was the county's first church of any denomination.
  • A hotel open since 1856The National Exchange Hotel was built in 1856 as three brick buildings and opened its doors on August 20 of that year. Its outside looks almost exactly as it did when it was new.
  • Sister towns in CornwallMiners from Cornwall brought their skills here during the Gold Rush. Because of them, Nevada City is twinned with Penzance and with St Just in Penwith, an old tin and copper mining town. A room in City Hall holds Cornish keepsakes given during visits between the towns.
  • Constitution Day since 1967The Constitution Day Parade began in 1967 and has grown into one of the oldest and largest celebrations of the day in the western United States. The Nevada City Classic, a professional bicycle race, goes back even further, to 1960.
