About North San Juan, California
The town's Spanish name came from the hill where Christian Kientz, a Mexican War veteran, found gold in 1853. Even so, it was as much a Yankee settlement as any gold town. About 10,000 people gathered here when it was headquarters for the rich hydraulic mines of San Juan Ridge.
Wells Fargo built an office in town in 1854 to hold gold and cash, and used it for six years. The building later served as a clothing store, a laundry and a liquor store. Today it is a pizzeria. The word North was added in 1857 to tell the town apart from San Juan in San Benito County.
- Local editor became a diplomatThe town's first newspaper, the Star, began in 1857. In 1858 Benjamin P. Avery bought it and renamed it the Hydraulic Press. Avery later became the American minister to China and died in Peking in 1875.
