About Altona, Colorado

Altona was planned in the early 1860s as a mountain metropolis. Toll roads were meant to fan out from it to the important mining camps. The plan collapsed when a toll road was built from Boulder to the camps instead. The railroads also passed the settlement by.

George Bader and Samuel Arbuthnot were among the pioneers who first farmed the rich lands near Altona. Bader did much for Boulder County by proving it was as true a fruit country as any under the sun.
