About Alturas, California

Alturas is a city of 2,715 people and the county seat of Modoc County, near the spot where the North and South forks of the Pit River meet. The ground was first an Achumawi village called Kosealekte, or Kasalektawi. Brothers Pressley and James Dorris later put a bridge across the Pit River here, and the settlement took the name Dorris Bridge, which its post office carried from 1871.

Modoc County was formed in 1874, and this town became its seat because it sat near the middle of the county, even though Adin and Cedarville were bigger at the time. It was called Dorrisville that same year, then Alturas, Spanish for "heights," in 1876. Only 148 people lived here in 1880, but settlers kept arriving for twenty more years, and Alturas was incorporated as a city on September 16, 1901. It is still the only incorporated city in the county.

  • A parish founded in 1883Father Patrick Kirley came over from Reno, Nevada, in 1883 to start a Roman Catholic parish in Alturas, and work on Sacred Heart Catholic Church began that year. The church joined the National Register in 1983.
  • The railroad's home officeThe Nevada-California-Oregon Railway ran its business from a general office building in Alturas, which joined the National Register in 1974. The company's NCO Railway Depot in town followed in 1985.
  • Headquarters for the backcountryThe Modoc National Forest, the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge and the Bureau of Land Management's Applegate Field Office are all run from Alturas. The city is also the trade center for nearby ranches and farms raising beef, sheep, potatoes and alfalfa. Lumber was a big business too, until rising costs and low softwood prices brought down the timber industry in the early 1980s.
  • Frost in every monthAlturas sits 4,370 feet up, with the Warner Mountains to the east and the Modoc Plateau to the north. Temperatures have dropped below freezing in every month of the year, and the coldest morning on record came on December 9, 1972, at βˆ’34 Β°F.
