About Likely, California

Likely is a small community in Modoc County, in the northeastern corner of California, at an elevation of 4,449 feet. It sits 18 miles south of Alturas, the county seat. Long before settlers came, the Achumawi, also called the Pit River people, had a village on this ground, which they named Hamawe or Hammawi.

Settlers first called the place South Fork, after the river beside it, and a South Fork post office ran from 1878 to 1882. When residents petitioned in 1886 to bring the post office back, the postal department rejected that name and three others they sent in. At a meeting a local rancher remarked that they might never settle on one, someone put forward Likely, and the name was voted in. On April 13, 1886, Likely's post office opened with Marx Lauer in charge.

  • 75 people in 1913A book published in 1913 counted 75 people in Likely and placed the town on the main automobile road between Madeline and Bayley.
  • Peat moss until 1987The Likely Peat Moss Company, Radel Inc., processed hypnum peat moss here. Crews strip-mined it from the floor of Jess Valley and hauled it 13 miles down the canyon road beside the South Fork to Likely, where it was packaged and sent out by truck and on the Southern Pacific Railroad until rail service ended. The high-quality supply ran out, and the company was dissolved in 1987 when its owner retired.
