About Madeline, California
Madeline is a community of 21 people in Lassen County, 45 miles north-northeast of Susanville at an elevation of 5,325 feet. Its name is older than the present town: a post office called Madeline opened in 1875, closed in 1878 and ran again from 1879 to 1882.
The Madeline that stands today began in 1902, when the Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad pushed its tracks across this part of the county. The post office, reopened in 1887, moved that year, and the county's supervisors approved the new townsite on October 9, 1902.
- A railroad stopMadeline grew up as a stop on the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway. The Southern Pacific Railroad later took over the line, and the tracks have since been abandoned.
- Fifteen good yearsFor about fifteen years after the railroad came, Madeline did well. Then World War I and the Depression of the 1930s struck the town and the surrounding Plains, and seventy percent of the area's people moved away.
- Mail since 1875The Madeline post office opened in 1875 and shut twice before it reopened in 1887. It moved in 1902, the year the railroad townsite was approved, and it was still operating in 1964. The town's ZIP code is 96119.
