About Alzada, Montana

Alzada is a community of 25 people in southern Carter County, near the Wyoming and South Dakota borders, and it is the southeasternmost settlement in Montana. It got its start in 1877 as a telegraph post beside the Little Missouri River. The wire linked two army posts, Fort Keogh in Montana Territory and Fort Meade over the line in Dakota Territory, and soldiers of the 7th U.S. Cavalry kept the station running.

A small settlement soon grew up around the post, and it became a stagecoach stop on the road between Deadwood and Miles City. Travelers on that route could rest and change horses here. In later years most of the people who settled the surrounding land came as homesteaders.

  • Stoneville in 1880The young settlement was first called Stoneville, a name it took in 1880 from Lewis M. Stone. Stone was the first settler in the community, and he also ran its saloon.
  • Renamed on July 16, 1885Another community had a name much like Stoneville, and the two kept getting mixed up. To end the confusion, the town officially changed its name on July 16, 1885. The new name, Alzada, honored Laura Alzada Shelden, one of the local pioneers.
  • A Little Bighorn veteranPrivate Peter Thompson survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn with the 7th Cavalry and received the Medal of Honor for his part in it. In 1890 he left Lead, Dakota Territory, with his brother William, and the two men took up a homestead north of Alzada, where Nine Mile Creek meets the Little Missouri River.
