About Ekalaka, Montana

Ekalaka is a town of 399 people and the county seat of Carter County, Montana, with Russell Creek running through it. The town takes its name from Ijkalaka, an Oglala Lakota woman born in 1858 on the Powder River, whose name means Restless or Moving About. She was the daughter of Eagle Man, and one account calls her a niece of Chief Red Cloud. At 16 she met David Harrison Russell, a scout and frontiersman, and she became his wife.

Russell started the town at the edge of his ranch. In the spring of 1885 a man named Carter got stuck in the mud there, and instead of moving on he opened a saloon. He built houses for the hunters and haulers who drove the local team-and-horse freight line, other people built beside them, and ranchers raising cattle and sheepherders soon came to the new settlement to trade.
