About Apalachin, New York

Apalachin is a community of 2,632 people in the Town of Owego, in Tioga County. It sits on the south side of the Susquehanna River, west of Binghamton. The community is named for Apalachin Creek, which starts in Apalacon Township in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Local tradition holds that the Native American name means "from whence the messenger returned."

The first settler was Isaac Harris, who came from Rhode Island in 1786. Half a century passed before Apalachin was established as a community in 1836. Today the census counts it as its own place inside the Town of Owego, and it falls within the Binghamton metro area.

  • The Apalachin Meeting, 1957On November 14, 1957, leaders of the American Mafia gathered at Joseph Barbara's house in Apalachin to settle disputes in the underworld. A curious state trooper spotted the expensive cars outside. More police soon came, and some of the country's most powerful gangsters fled across the fields. Mobsters and the FBI still call the meeting simply "Apalachin." The films The Valachi Papers, Analyze This and Mob Town later retold the story.
  • Field Days from 1960In 1960 the Apalachin Firemen's Field Days began as a small event in a field. It grew into a four-day carnival, usually held in the first week of June. The carnival moved to a permanent site with big pavilions that locals still call the beer and food tents. Game booths stood in a square around 15 to 20 rides. There were fireworks, a large parade and the Little Miss Apalachin contest. The event was cancelled in 2016.
  • Father of the Modern NavyIsaac Catlin and Benjamin Franklin Tracy, both of Apalachin, each received the Medal of Honor. Tracy later served as Secretary of the Navy under President Benjamin Harrison. He is remembered as the Father of the Modern Navy.
