About Apison, Tennessee

Apison is a community of 4,428 people in Hamilton County, east of Chattanooga and close to the Georgia line. People had settled here by 1840, and for years the settlement got its mail by horse and buggy. When the railroad reached it in 1881, railroad officials named the place O'Brian.

That name did not last, because another Tennessee town was already called O'Brian. Workers building the line had found large deposits of a clay called Apison shale along the tracks, so the settlement took Apison as its new name.

  • A school turned retreatIn 2001 the old Apison Elementary School building got a new purpose as a Tres Dias retreat center. Today's Apison Elementary School stands at 10433 East Brainerd Road.
  • A hometown history in 2013Bill Hullander, a trustee who grew up in Apison, wrote a book about his home community in 2013. The Chattanoogan reported that it explains where the name came from and traces the settlement back to 1840.
