About Arkwright, New York

Arkwright is named for Richard Arkwright, who invented a spinning device. Settlers arrived around 1807, and the town was formed in 1829 from Villenova and Pomfret. Dairy farms and cheesemaking drove its early economy. Arkwright set up a cheese cooperative before most other towns in New York did.
