About Fredonia, New York
In 1821 William Hart dug the first well in the United States made to produce natural gas. He dug it by hand on the banks of Canadaway Creek, 27 feet deep. Hollow logs carried the gas. By 1825 it lit two stores, two shops and a gristmill.
The name Fredonia was coined by Samuel Latham Mitchill. He joined the English word freedom with a Latin ending. Mitchill hoped it would replace the name of the United States. That plan failed, but many towns and cities took the name instead.
- First gas companyBuilding on Hart's work, the Fredonia Gas Light Company formed in 1858. It became the first natural gas company in America. A stone monument downtown marks the site of the first gas well.
