About the City of Dunkirk, Chautauqua County, New York

The city was named for Dunkirk in France. After World War II devastated its French namesake, the city led the Dunkirk-to-Dunkerque relief drive in 1946. The aid program won international notice and became a model for similar efforts across the United States.

Horatio G. Brooks founded the Brooks Locomotive Works here in 1869. The plant built almost 4,000 steam locomotives and won awards at international exhibitions. It merged into the American Locomotive Company in 1901.
