About Silver Creek, New York

Silver Creek is a village of 2,617 people in the town of Hanover, Chautauqua County, on the shore of Lake Erie. It takes its name from the small creek that flows through it. Settlers arrived around 1803, and the first schoolhouse went up around 1823.

Silver Creek was incorporated as a village in 1848 and became an important Lake Erie port, until the railroads drew most of the shipping away. Those rail lines still cross the village on a skew arch bridge, built at an angle, a design found in only a few places in the country. Two trains collided close to the bridge in September 1886, and about 15 people died and about as many were hurt.

“It was raised on end, and used for some time as a grocery ; and on one occasion by a ladies' tea-party.”
History of Chautauqua County, 1875
  • The giant black walnutA black walnut beside Walnut Creek was thought to be the biggest tree in Chautauqua County, and maybe in all of New York. It was 27 feet around and 9 feet across, and the creek was named for it. On April 22, 1822, a storm brought the tree down. Later the hollow trunk went to England for a London museum, where a fire destroyed it.
  • Festival of Grapes since 1968Each year on the third weekend in September, Silver Creek celebrates the Concord grape, a key local crop, with live music, a midway, grape stomping, a wine tent and a grand parade of bands, fire companies and veterans. In 2008, on its trip to 50 states in 50 days, Good Morning America came, and Robin Roberts, Diane Sawyer, Chris Cuomo and Sam Champion stomped grapes on a farm in honor of Lucille Ball.
  • The flood of 2009On August 9, 2009, a flash flood tore through the village. It badly damaged the fire hall, the emergency squad building and their vehicles, wrecked homes along Walnut Creek, leveled the Silver Village Trailer Park and washed out streets. The public works building on North Main Street was destroyed, so the department relocated to Routes 5 and 20, into the building that once held the Bentges distributing plant.
  • Electric trains, 1907 to 1933For about 26 years Silver Creek sat on the Buffalo and Erie Railway, a high-speed electric interurban line running between Buffalo and Erie. The New York Public Service Commission ordered it abandoned in 1933 to favor highway travel.
