About Hanover, New York
Hanover is a town in the northeast corner of Chautauqua County, with Lake Erie on its north side and Cattaraugus Creek on its northeast edge, across from the Cattaraugus Reservation. Its first settler came in 1796, and in 1812 Hanover was split off from Pomfret to become a town of its own. Hanover later gave up land twice, first for the new town of Villenova in 1823 and then for Sheridan in 1827.
- Irving's three namesThe hamlet of Irving, beside Cattaraugus Creek on the town's northeast line, went by Cattaraugus first and Acasto after that. One part of it was called La Grange, after the estate in France where the Marquis de Lafayette lived.
- Hamlets named for settlersNashville sits along Route 39 down in the town's southeast corner, and it carries the name of Deacon Silas Nash, who settled there. Smith's Mills, in the eastern part of Hanover, grew up around the home of Rodney Smith.
- Hanover Center's own fire companyThe Hanover Center fire company started out as Silver Creek Hose Co. #2. It broke away from the Silver Creek Fire Department in 1959 and became Hanover Hose Company #1, which has stayed independent ever since under a contract with the town. Its district now covers more of Hanover than any other fire company's.
