About Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania
Chesterbrook is a community of 5,610 people in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, and its land lies south of Valley Forge National Historical Park. Before the houses came, this ground was Chesterbrook Farm, the country home of A. J. Cassatt. He had retired as first vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and spent seventeen years here raising horses, cattle and Shropshire sheep, the breed the farm became known for.
In 1899 a delegation from the railroad came out to the farm and asked Cassatt to become its president. He took the job, though he told them he would rather stay at Chesterbrook watching his horses run. Back at work, he took charge of building a tunnel beneath the Hudson River so his trains could reach Manhattan.
- A Frank Furness barnCassatt's great barn burned in 1898, and he hired the architect Frank Furness to design a new one. The farm's workers' houses and outbuildings stood around Bradford Road, all painted the red of Pennsylvania Railroad cars. The Furness barn, by 1996 the only one of his barns still standing, was saved from demolition and became the Rocking Horse Nursery School.
- Approved in 1978The Fox Companies bought two large parcels of the old farmland, and under Pennsylvania's Municipalities Planning Code of 1969 the Chesterbrook development won approval in 1978. Walking paths now link its neighborhoods to Valley Forge National Historical Park.
- Company headquartersAmerisourceBergen once kept its headquarters in Chesterbrook before moving to Conshohocken. The company Ionos still runs one of its two headquarters here.
