About Tredyffrin, Pennsylvania
Tredyffrin is a township of 31,927 people in eastern Chester County, in the Great Valley. On March 13, 1684, William Penn set aside land in his province for Welsh immigrants, and this Welsh Tract was surveyed the same year. The Welsh had hoped to govern the tract themselves, but it was split between Chester and Philadelphia counties in 1685. Tredyffrin became a township in 1707. Its name joins the Welsh words for town and for a wide, farmed valley.
Thomas Jerman opened the township's first mill in 1710, on what is now North Valley Road, and Swedesford Road was laid out by 1718. The number of landowners living here grew from 30 in 1722 to 83 in 1774. In the 19th century the Main Line railroad brought new growth. Its trains ended at Paoli, which sits on the township's western edge.
- Baptists since 1711The Baptist minister Hugh Davis came over from Britain in 1710 and found several Baptist families already here. Together they founded the Baptist Church in the Great Valley on April 22, 1711. The church met in Radnor at first, but by 1722 its members had put up a log church in Tredyffrin. A state marker calls it Pennsylvania's second oldest Baptist church and credits it with starting eight nearby congregations. Its second building went up in 1805.
- The School Fight of 1932The Tredyffrin-Easttown schools taught Black and white children together, which was unusual for the area. In 1932 the district built a new school and made plans to separate students by race. Black families kept their children out of the schools for two years in protest. A settlement in 1934 kept the schools integrated and helped end school segregation in Pennsylvania.
- Generals at Valley ForgeA piece of Valley Forge National Historical Park lies on the township's northern edge, where George Washington's army camped during the Revolution. Several houses here sheltered his generals, among them Lafayette, Anthony Wayne and William Alexander, Lord Stirling. Lord Stirling's quarters are now on the National Register.
- Tredyffrin WaterLimestone lies close to the surface in the Great Valley, so many lime kilns were built here in the 18th century. Around 1900 the mine owner William Rennyson bottled the fizzy water from his limestone quarry at Howellville and sold it as Tredyffrin Water.
- An eight-sided schoolhouseThe Old Eagle School was built in 1788. Diamond Rock Schoolhouse, an octagonal one-room school, followed in 1818.
