About Atmore, Alabama

Atmore is a city of 8,391 people in Escambia County, in southwestern Alabama on the Florida state line. It began as a supply depot that the logging businessman William Larkin Williams kept on a side track off the Mobile and Great Northern line, and by 1866 the stop was called Williams Station. By 1885 it had 195 residents and its first polling place. Then in 1886 William Marshall Carney built a sawmill, and new settlers followed the work.

The town was supposed to be named Carney, but Carney's brother had already given that name to a town nearby. So Carney honored his close friend C. P. Atmore, an agent of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, who never visited the place, and the new name came in 1897. Lumber and turpentine carried the local economy, and Atmore was incorporated on May 9, 1907.

  • Railroad Bill's last standOn March 7, 1896, lawmen shot and killed a man in Atmore whom people believed to be Railroad Bill, the notorious train robber. The Encyclopedia of Alabama calls the shootout the most notable event in the town's history.
  • Power around the clock in 1914Atmore got its first telephone company in 1908, and around then the W. M. Carney Light Company put in a generator that gave the town limited electricity. A water system followed by about 1911, and the J. B. McReary Company of Atlanta modernized it in 1913. A bigger generator in 1914 brought 24-hour power to wired homes, and the first hospital opened in 1915.
  • Satsuma oranges and cottonIn the early twentieth century Atmore grew into a farming center built on cotton, corn and potatoes. For the first two decades of that century its growers were also major producers of satsuma oranges. Later in the century soybeans and wheat took cotton's place as the main cash crops.
  • Passenger trains until 2005In 1914 a second railroad, the Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, linked Atmore to Pensacola and to the coal fields near Birmingham; the Frisco later took it over. Frisco passenger service ended in 1955 and the Louisville and Nashville's in 1971. Amtrak's Gulf Breeze stopped here until 1995, and the Sunset Limited kept coming until 2005, when Katrina cut the tracks.
  • Home of the Poarch CreekAtmore is the seat of government for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, which is Alabama's one federally recognized tribe. The tribe opened its first casino here in 1985, and its pow-wow each Thanksgiving brings turkey, roasted corn and a dance competition.
