About Aurora, West Virginia

Aurora is a community of 200 people in Preston County, set along U.S. Route 50 between the Maryland border and Rowlesburg. German families settled it, and Frederick Harsh, who came over from Germany, made his home on the eastern part of the townsite in 1788. John Stough, a Lutheran minister, was another of the first settlers.

The village was called Salem at first and then Mount Carmel, and it took the name Aurora because it sits so high. Through the early and middle nineteenth century its people lived by farming and cutting timber. In the late 1880s several large hotels went up nearby, some with casinos, pools and concert halls, and Aurora became known as a resort.

  • Preston's first Sunday schoolIn 1825 the father of James H. Shaffer organized a Sunday school at Aurora, the first one anywhere in Preston County. The county historian Oren F. Morton recorded it in his 1914 history of Preston.
  • An artist colony in the 1930sBy the 1930s artists had gathered in the Youghiogheny Forest close to Aurora and formed a colony of their own there, a generation after the resort hotels had first drawn visitors to the high country.
  • Cathedral State ParkCathedral State Park lies on U.S. 50 just east of Aurora's post office, so the village is the nearest town for people visiting the park.
  • The setting of Recovery BoysMost of the documentary film Recovery Boys takes place in Aurora.
