About Bagdad, Florida

Bagdad is a community of 4,467 people in Santa Rosa County, on the Blackwater River. Joseph Forsyth, a lumberman, saw a fortune in North Florida's huge pine forests in 1829, and he named the town after Baghdad, Iraq. A settler started the first sawmill here in 1840, and a post office called Bagdad has been open since 1887.

In the early 1840s a steam-powered mill raised the town's output, and Bagdad lumber sailed past the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to Atlantic ports and on to Western Europe, the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. The mill finally shut down in 1939. Trade journals then looked back on Bagdad as the home of one of the most successful lumber companies in the Western Hemisphere.

  • Burned ahead of the Union armyOn March 11, 1862, Union troops were invading, and Confederate forces raced to destroy anything the federal army could use in Santa Rosa County. At Bagdad they set fire to the lumber mills, the shipyard and a gunboat that had just been completed. The town's mills were sawing again by 1885, when they supplied the lumber for a new Methodist church.
  • The Thompson House, about 1847Benjamin Woodson Thompson (1809-1876), a partner in the Forsyth and Simpson sawmill business, built his home here around 1847. Its balanced Greek Revival front, two-level porch, railing and gable roof make it the finest surviving house of its type in the Florida Panhandle. In the Civil War, Union raiders of Bagdad and Milton, including the 2nd Maine Cavalry, the 19th Iowa Infantry and United States Colored Troops, camped there and covered its plaster walls with drawings and signatures.
  • A church begun in 1830Bagdad's Methodists began meeting in 1830 beneath a shelter of brush. Building of a new sanctuary started in 1885 on land from three partners in the Bagdad Sash and Blind Factory: W.H. Sindorf, W.A. Watson and H. W. Thompson. Square-cut nails held its shiplap siding, milled from the best Bagdad lumber.
