About Bakersville, Maryland
Bakersville is a crossroads village of 30 people in Washington County, Maryland. It grew where one of the first east to west roads across western Maryland met the main road coming north from the Sharpsburg area. In the middle and later years of the eighteenth century German settlers filled this corner of the county, and the spot became known as Carey's Crossroads, after George Carey, a leading landowner. In the 1800s the village had a store, a post office, a doctor's office and a grist mill, and census takers listed many C&O Canal workers and boatmen living in and around it.
“It is a large brick edifice, occupying a commanding elevation, and surrounded by forests, which form a conspicuous feature of that section of the country.”
- Named for Elias BakerAbout 1827 Elias Baker, Sr. built a house and a store close to the spot where Bakersville and Fairplay Roads now meet. In 1833 he was named the village's first postmaster, and the crossroads took his name.
- One church for three faithsAbout 1800 the German families, who were Lutheran, German Reformed and Methodist Episcopal, worked together to build one log meeting house and a graveyard on land George Carey provided. By 1823 they had outgrown it, so they put up a stone church and a schoolhouse in its place. In 1854, with enough members to go their own ways, the congregations split, and the Lutherans built Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.
- Salem church on the hillSalem's brick church still stands on high ground in what the 1882 county history called the southern part of Tilghmanton District, and that history named it the most prominent church in the neighborhood. Its cemetery holds many of the village's leading early residents. Today the church and cemetery are the only public place left in Bakersville, with several older homes around them.
