About Ballville, Ohio

Ballville is a community of 3,823 people in Sandusky County, just beside Fremont on the Sandusky River. The settlement grew up where the river's second rapids gave settlers water power to run machinery. About 1821 three mills went up there: David Chambers and David Moore each built a grist mill, and Mr. Tindall built a sawmill farther upstream.

In 1839 James Valletti bought a share of the mills and the land around them. The next year he and Moore had the village surveyed and divided into lots, and it took its name from the township that surrounds it.

“And your petitioners also pray that the township be called Ball's township.”
History of Sandusky County, Ohio, 1882
  • A skirmish on the mail roadTwo days before Croghan's victory at Fort Stephenson, Colonel Ball's squadron rode out to protect the mail and military messages moving from Fort Seneca to Fort Stephenson. On that road, on ground that is now Oakwood Cemetery, the troops met a band of Indians. Ball ordered a charge before his men could form, led it himself and struck the first blow. The fight is remembered in the township's name.
  • Ball's township in 1822When settlers petitioned for a new township in March 1822, they asked that it be named for the colonel who had fought on their road. The township became Ballville, and the mill village laid out in 1840 carried the same name.
