About Balm, Florida
Balm is a community of 6,541 people in southern Hillsborough County, with Riverview to the north and Wimauma to the south. In October 1901 the Seaboard Air Line Railway began laying a line south from its Turkey Creek station, and the new stations at Durant, Boyette and Balm each grew into a town. At Balm the railroad put up a one-room station and a water tank, and trains stopped there on a flag.
A post office opened in 1902 under the name Doric, and a month later it was renamed Balm, most likely for the area's balmy weather. The station brought business: a cotton gin, logging crews, and packing houses for strawberry and potato fields that farmers had just planted. By 1911 the settlement had a general store, a blacksmith, sawmills and a teacher.
- Lights on in 1937Electricity reached Balm in 1937. Soon afterward the community got a single telephone, kept in a barn where anyone could use it. By 1945 more than a thousand people lived in the area.
- From logging to citrusBalm started out as a rail stop and logging town. Once the timber work faded, farming took over, especially citrus groves, and raising tropical fish became another important business here.
- Where Florida breeds tomatoesThe University of Florida's Tomato Breeding Program works in Balm. In 2005 the Bradenton and Dover research centers were combined into the Gulf Coast Research and Experiment Center, which moved to Balm. Its researchers also study hops.
