About Barberton, Washington

Barberton is a community of 8,567 people in Clark County, north of Vancouver. Pioneers of the 19th century, most of them from Ireland, settled here and felled the forest so they could farm the land. They first called their settlement St. John's, for a church of that name built in 1868. The later name, Barberton, is said to honor a man named Barber, who served as its first postmaster.

  • Pleasant Valley since the 1830sTrappers for the Hudson's Bay Company worked this country as early as the 1830s, and they called it Pleasant Valley because they liked what they saw. The name lasted. The area still went by it when the Meyer family bought their farm around 1917, and Pleasant Valley School serves much of Barberton today.
  • Pleasant Acres, around 1917Heye Meyer followed his father into farming. In 1917 or 1918 he and his wife Eva bought 52 acres in Pleasant Valley and named the place Pleasant Acres. Heye managed to grow tobacco there, something almost no farmer in Washington had pulled off. The Heye H. and Eva Meyer Farmstead is now on the National Register.
  • Planks from Fort VancouverEva Meyer handed down a family story about the inside of the farm's old cabin. By her account, the Hudson's Bay Company cut the cedar logs in 1845, milled them into planks 7 inches wide, and built them into a structure at or close to Fort Vancouver during the early 1850s, long before the wood lined the Meyer cabin.
