About Bargaintown, New Jersey
Bargaintown is a community of 5,360 people in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County. It once served as the hub of the whole township. A grist mill and a saw mill worked here, and its post office was the only one between Somers Point and English Creek.
Speculators expected the place to boom, so they bought land and laid out town lots. The growth they counted on never came, the lots were given up, and John Ireland bought them cheaply. People have called the community Bargaintown ever since.
“Somers offered liberty to his women slaves if they would build a way through the swamp. The road originally was stepping stones, carried by the slaves in their aprons.”
- A meeting house in 1764In 1764 Andrew Blackman, a cordwainer of Egg Harbor, sold about one acre near the village for two pounds. The land was set aside for a Presbyterian meeting house, open to anyone who wished to worship there, and for a public burying yard for the dead of every denomination. Known as Cedar Bridge Meeting House or Blackman's Meeting House, it came with a pledge from its trustees that everyone would share equal privileges in the burial ground.
- Firefighters since 1932The Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company #2 was founded in 1932. It now protects the community from two stations, one on Mill Road and one on Tony "Mink" Pagano Drive.
- Home of township governmentBargaintown is still the seat of Egg Harbor Township. The township's municipal building stands here, about 0.25 mi east of the Garden State Parkway.
